Creative Copywriting: 1-Day Workshop

Unlike other copywriting training courses you may have been on, this workshop will stretch completely new writing muscles. They may be a little underdeveloped, or even a little flabby, but don’t worry. We’ve developed a series of exercises to awaken and strengthen them.

By the end of the day, you’ll be writing copy that will leave you wondering why on Earth it’s taken you this long to be this good.

We have developed a series of exercises, games and experiences that will help you access new parts of your brain – the parts where truly innovative writing appears. One thing you’ll notice on the day is the sheer amount of copywriting you get to do. In small groups, in pairs, on your own.

The entire day is intensely practical and huge fun as you work with your fellow copywriters, collaborating, listening and discussing each other’s copy. By the end of the day you will be an immeasurably better writer. You will have learned how to draw on your own wellspring of creativity and also to borrow from other communicators in other fields.

a) a more experienced copywriter looking to upgrade your toolkit.

b) a junior to middleweight writer looking for shortcuts to accelerate your career.

You could be working as an in-house writer, a marketeer, an agency copywriter or a freelance.

But whatever your position or role, or industry …

  • Five simple techniques for modifying tone of voice
  • Practising what we preach – writing in different voices

13.15-14.00     Lunch

Afternoon: from theory to practice: writing that gets results

14.00  Making your writing pleasurable as well as persuasive

  • Rewarding your reader with rhythm, rhyme, alliteration and pace.
  • Does humour belong in copywriting?
  • Learning from the masters of oratory.

15.00 – 15.15   Afternoon break

15.15   Putting it all together

Writing integrated campaigns using all the day’s techniques.

Group and individual copywriting exercises:

Who are your teachers?


I am co-hosting this workshop with my good friend Vikki Ross.

Vikki and I also co-host Copy Cabana, the annual event for copywriters.

She is a D&AD jury foreman and judge, a teacher at SCA, the world’s best advertising school, and guardian of tone of voice for Sky.
